Why Contract?

The most common question we are asked is “why contract?”,   I reached out to some of our recruiters and asked them their thoughts on why a job seeker may choose a contract over a permanent position.

The feedback I received gives an excellent insight on the topic and felt it would be worthwhile to share;

  • Speed – Decision making during the hiring process for contract work is much faster than that on a permanent role. Permanent roles can take upto 3 months on average, but a contract usually takes a week or 2 for a final decision to be made, sometimes less than that.
  • Pay – when working on contract, people like that they are paid for every hour of work. Oftentimes during busy seasons we put a couple of extra hours in on a week or two without thinking twice about it. However, when you work on contract you are paid for every additional hour you work.
  • Networking – By working on a Contract you’re exposed to different people and different environments that not only serve as a learning experience but as a very effective way to network.
  • Canadian Experience – For many newcomers to Canada, Contract work is the only reasonable way to obtain the much cherished “Canadian Experience”.
  • Transitional Option – In some cases people turn to Contract work as a transition or an optional means of income when they’re “between jobs”.
  • Foot In The Door – Many people see Contract work as a way to get their “foot in the door” with the hopes that an initial Contract might evolve or turn into a permanent opportunity.

We asked all candidates that have completed a contract with us, what they enjoyed most about a contract role and these are the most common responses we received:

1.Flexibility, flexibility, flexibility

2.Experience– Contract work allows them to expand their knowledge base; working with different software, challenges of different work environments, excellent companies to work for; and to see how different companies/industries operate.

3.Variety  - variety of job functions, variety of employers and variety of work situations
