The Secret to Your Job Search
You’re probably well aware, or at the very least, aware, of the psychological phenomenon that is ‘The Secret’, or, more commonly known as the law of attraction. But unless you’ve seen the documentary, read the book, or done the research, its principles and theories may seem a little far-fetched and unrealistic. Become wealthy, happy and healthy just by thinking positively? Receive cheques in the mail just by visualizing? Hard to believe. This is not to say that seeing the documentary or reading the book will change any of that, but it will most certainly present you with a simplified path to happiness, and a hopeful outlook for the future.
While ‘The Secret’ is fairly new (It was released in 2005), the laws that supposedly govern one’s success and happiness; the laws of attraction, are as old as time. Apparently, some of the world’s greatest scientists, philosophers, and authors have been preaching these laws for centuries, as have most religions. So why keep such a low profile on something so powerful?
Whether you choose to follow these laws is your choice, but it couldn’t hurt to try. Furthermore, it could even help you in your job search, as outlined by author Laura George in her book, “Excuse Me: Your Job is Waiting”. George offers a series of how-to’s that are geared toward all facets of the job search, from where to look, to the cover letter and resume, to the interview process. Most importantly however, she covers the importance of positive thinking, knowing one’s own value, and letting go of negative feelings and thoughts that may actually reflect in your overall demeanor, and hinder your chances of finding the right job for you. Here are some of her ideas:
Positive thinking translates into positive energy
According to the law of attraction, the very core of attaining what you want from life is thinking positively; simply by imaging that you already have what you want in your life. For example, when meeting with a potential employer, imagine that you already have the position, and truly believe it. In turn, this thinking will reflect on your attitude and confidence, and radiate positive energy to your interviewer. By increasing your confidence, you will be better equipped to ‘sell’ yourself, a quality that is extremely important in the initial interview stages.
The real first impression: the cover letter
Rewind to the initial contact and ultimately, the first impression: the cover letter. George explains that you need to think of your cover letter as a sales tool; a way to outline your skills and appropriateness for the job, while enticing the employer to read on. Because cover letters can make or break your candidacy, it is vital to take extra care when writing one. George suggests utilizing key words from the job posting in your cover letter, connecting the dots between requirements for the position and your skills and experience.
You’ve landed an interview, how to prepare
George recommends beginning your interview day with mental preparation. Address your anxieties, then move forward by reflecting upon your value as a potential employee. Next, visualize yourself making a great, lasting impression, and obtaining the position. The key here is to visualize success, and allow that positive energy to radiate throughout your interview. Your interviewer will notice, and you will feel more confident as a result.
George also includes tips on the interview, follow-up, and how to stay positive in case of rejection. Whether the law of attraction will help you land your desired position or not, it will most certainly make a difference in the way you present yourself, and the energy that you exude to others. Furthermore, if you have the skills and qualifications for the job you want, positive energy and a confident outlook may just give you the edge you need to stand out from the rest.
