The Importance of Communication in the Accounting Industry

Preparing you to communicate in the Canadian accounting world!

The Canadian Accounting Industry is in the midst of a great change. A third of Canada’s accountants will retire within the next ten years, and there are not enough Canadian graduates to replace them. To meet the needs of our industry, accountants are being recruited from foreign countries in unprecedented numbers, but the process is not always easy. Many accountants, having spent years mastering numbers, face a new challenge in their Canadian offices: words. While most newcomer accountants arrive in Canada with a good textbook understanding of English, the rapid, slang-filled speech of native speakers and the implicit rules of Canadian office culture may be alien to them.

That’s why Vince Dong, C.A., founded Language Education for Accounting Professionals (L.E.A.P. Inc). As the owner of a successful accounting firm, Mr. Dong knows how important communication skills are for the working accountant. L.E.A.P Inc was created to help foreign-trained accountants get the jobs they want, and accounting firms get the employees they need.

With the help of the top accounting firms, L.E.A.P. Inc’s staff of highly-trained E.S.L. professionals created a streamlined curriculum for newcomer accountants. L.E.A.P Inc. worked with the firms to discover and address the precise communication obstacles faced by many of these accountants. Focusing on pronunciation classes and Canadian office culture, L.E.A.P. Inc classes address the skills most needed to succeed in the Canadian accounting industry.

L.E.A.P. Inc classes cover aspects of culture that many native Canadians take for granted: how you should conduct yourself at meal meetings? Do you have to go to the office holiday party? If so, what do you wear? When is criticism appropriate and how can it be expressed politely? How do successful people shake hands? How can you tell a colleague you don’t understand them while maintaining your feeling of professionalism?

In addition to Canadian Office Culture, Business Writing, Vocabulary, Small Talk, Office English and Spoken Grammar classes, every L.E.A.P. Inc module includes a separate Pronunciation class. Accountants are highly educated people, but an excellent understanding of English can be masked if the speaker has a thick accent. L.E.A.P. Inc classes help their students gain the skills to communicate their proficiency clearly and accurately.
