Balance in Numbers, Balance in Life
As a Finance or Accounting professional, you spend a great deal of time balancing numbers. But what about balancing your life? Do you live to work, work to live, or find yourself somewhere in the middle?
More and more, job searchers are opting for positions that allow a healthy balance between work and life, to make room for family, travel, hobbies, and day-to-day commitments. Simultaneously, many workplaces are accommodating this growing need by implementing programs which allow employees the freedom to leave early for appointments, work shorter workweeks, take a leave of absence to take a course or travel, and so on.
In fact, according to a January 2006 study conducted by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, 69% of CA’s under the age of 35 stated that a healthy work-life balance was one of the most important factors of their current positions, while 77% stated that the lack of a work-life balance was a key reason in leaving their previous firms.
However, how can this work-life balance be achieved when you’re working year-round with looming deadlines? As an accounting or finance professional, you are more than likely facing recurring terms like month-end, quarter-end, and year-end, which make it rather difficult to find the time to live your life. While some firms are now addressing this issue by hiring more staff, others still employ more of a traditional attitude; work more, live less.
